Come Lord Jesus, Come
You ever have one of those nights where nobody in the house wants to sleep but you π ? Well that’s been us over hereππΌ♀️! Apparently, mama is the only one that wants some shut eye. Aubs has been teething (one year molars), the dog decided to pace the house the ENTIRE night, meanwhile, the cat was singing the song of her people as loud as she could in the foyer so it would echo through the whole house π. Yeah, fun stuff.
But while these nights are challenging, I know they won’t be forever. I remind myself and my husband that this is a short season (even though it may feel long while you’re in it).
There’s few things I’ve been intentional about doing to keep my cool in this season. And while I’m no baby expert, perfect parent, or sinless Christian - I can feel Jesus extending his grace and arms for me to fall into when it all gets to be too much.
For me, the nights tend to be the hardest. Whether my little will just not give into sleep, or she wakes what feels like a million times in one night - nights can be tough.
I recently chose to switch out my usual lullabies for some praise and worship as I rock or walk her to sleep. The top two songs I sing on repeat.... 1. All Who Are Thirsty (Come Lord Jesus, Come) and 2. Sanctuary (Lord Prepare Me).
These two songs are great loop songs, meaning there’s no real ending and you could sing them forever. Another thing that I love about these songs, they change my mindset. Reminding me that I am weak in these middle of the night moments, but God is always willing to fill my cup, no matter the time of day. And sometimes we just need a reset. A reminder that our bodies are Gods, a place for him to dwell. A sanctuary. And worship can happen anywhere! It doesn’t have to be within a church. It can happen barefoot, in your kitchen, bouncing your baby around the island at 10pm.
Another option, if singing isn’t your thing, tune into a podcast. There’s so many good ones! Journeywomen, Daily Grace, Proverbs 31 Ministries, Glorious in the Mundane, Risen Motherhood - just to name a few! I find I tense up more when I’m trying to get the baby down and she’s stalling sleep, which makes her tense up, and then we are just both on edge. If I put on a podcast, I can listen, calm myself, and before you know it, she’s relaxed in my arms and off to dreamland.
Ok, so, we’ve talked a lot about nights, but what about days? During the days, I’m learning to adore God in the middle minutes of my day. I’m reading “Adore” by Sara Hagerty (definitely recommend!). And she’s teaching me to go to God anytime of day with any question or emotion I may have. To let him meet me while doing the dishes, folding the laundry, or glancing up at the sky.
I also highly recommend keeping in the Word. Focus on one verse for a whole month, or read a new verse everyday. It’s up to you. You see, this relationship between you and God - it’s personal. It’s your choice. He won’t force you to do anything, say anything, or even spend time with Him. But it’s so important that you do.
He doesn’t care if you’ve showered today. He doesn’t care that you fed Mac and cheese for every meal. He certainly doesn’t care how far you are behind on laundry or how littered your floors are with toys. He will meet you. In the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening. Every time, he will show up if you do. I can promise you that.
I love you friend! I’m praying for you. If you ever need to reach out, you know where to find me π
